On 27 February, a networking session “How can business defend its losses: the realities of losses compensation from the Russian Federation aggression“ was held. At the invitation of the UBA Office in the Odesa Region, Odesa Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry took part in the event.
In her speech, Svitlana Volkova, Vice President of Odesa Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stressed the importance of collecting evidence for the businesses affected by the Russian armed aggression against Ukraine. This is necessary for filing compensation claims and going to court.
In particular, it is important to:
- document the damaged or destroyed property which is the basis for future legal proceedings;
- apply for a force majeure certificate which can help businesses in their relations with contractors and financial institutions.
The head of Kyiv office of the Register of damages for Ukraine spoke about the process of its formation, mechanisms and role in the future compensation litigation.
The participants also heard practical case studies of companies that had already started the process of obtaining compensation:
- the companies that have applied to the Ukrainian court - procedural peculiarities and first results;
- the companies that have initiated international litigation - ways, prospects and challenges.
Following the event, the participants together with the organisers outlined further steps to implement the decisions discussed and strengthen cooperation between business, lawyers and government institutions.
